good morning, this is Dan and we're going to be with you until 12 noon. We've got an exciting show lined up today. First. We're going to start off with a update. My roving correspondent, Jeri chess, ler. And she did a, she recorded numerous sound bites from the demonstration last Tuesday. At Dominion East, Ohio. We're going to start off with her, basically a montage of clips from her. From her, basically time she spent down there. All right, here we go. Oxygen station bus yesterday. Our guests will be here for the kids because they had to go help us with their bills and they demand a certain time and no cut off. Everybody can participate, they're doing the right thing. The last gift that was way too. All right. That was those were sound bites from Jerry Tessler. Thank you very much. Jerry. That was at the those were sound bites from the protest last Tuesday against East Ohio, the gouging by Dominion East, Ohio, delegation of three people went inside tempting to inside the Dominion East Ohio, building to give a Letter of Invitation to to decision, makers of a Dominion East Ohio to meet with consumers for fair utility rates. The protest got a pretty extensive TV coverage and it seems that they got a whole lot of support while they're on the street as you can here. We're from the various cars that signaled their support as well. As you know, you can hear the sound bites from the actual protesters themselves. She interviewed both pet gay. So and Devon who is a young person who is also out there supporting the protests. We have several more interviews we're going to do today. We've got an exciting lineup and I think what we're going to start off. With first is an interview. I conducted just not this past Sunday, but the Sunday before in my car. We were sitting in the car in front of 2100 Lakeside and I interviewed Anthony ball. And you may get a sense that we were all the kind of background noise is coming from the rain. That was the driving rain. That was hitting our car and I believe, okay. And here we go, the Anthony ball. All right, this is Dan Carter. I'm sitting here with Anthony ball. He's in fact, one of the original Minds that pushed getting this show, radio show Frost radio on to the air. He's pushed to ensure that the homeless have a voice and not only that they have a voice that that voice is Amplified. He's been on the streets. Anon throughout the 90s and he's learned a lot about the way Society operates from this perspective. And hopefully while we have them with us, he could share some of the knowledge that he's gained and give us a new perspective on what is in fact going on here in Cleveland. So we can start off maybe and you want to give give us some background, some of your own personal background and and how you ended up on the street Anthony. Well, I don't have what you want to call as a like a Royal Red Carpet type of background. I had, you know, had a real pretty bad upbringing for us family my family as well. Was basically broken up when I was young. I ended up in institutions and I had a lot of people, taking care of me, not no one that I can really trust at that time. And that's basically how my life went it. But for bouncing from one place to one store to another, and eventually, I ended up getting caught with the wrong crowd, or ended up with the wrong people. And I got into some trouble and I went and did some time. But during this time, one of the spots that I went to They didn't really have anything far as Rehabilitation as far as, you know, learning any kind of skills or, or hands on something that I could use as I get out of prison and come back out to the street and see what the state or the parole board. All they do is give you a meets with seven $75 when you walk out the door and I giving you anything far as a place to stay or or give you a guide or mode you somewhere. When you coming back out into society. So basically when I walked out the doors, I had that $75 and I got on had to spend another 15, 20 miles of that just to get on the Greyhound. And then plus, you don't have to eat a little bit, but basically coming back into town and seeing how things have changed as far as the rich get richer. And then seeing that the poor, the poor gets poor. Far as housing or any place that matter or just trying to be able to maintain a certain status quo when I came back here, was nearly impossible to do. The reason why is because I did not have any ID or any kind of credential when I first got out of prison, so I had to go to the Social Security office. I tried to go to the welfare building and because I didn't have one individual piece of paper. They were denying the all of this asset. So I took what I need to Baby to gain some type of Recognition that I'm in the city or having a play or getting a place to stay or anything. You can't do anything without an ID. Basically, I started going to shelters because everybody was slamming, the door on my face and by me having a criminal background, it seemed like once I was go for a job, anybody want to know my background? If I try to get a place about having the kind of money. I will talk with different people. Look at me, like I was basically nobody. But far as me being homeless out here on these streets, all that I'm seeing for what I see in front of my eyes is entertaining, all the buildings down at building up hotels, you know, they're talking about building new Convention Center, you know, the Cleveland Hopkins airports talking about expanding and knock it down and I asked Center, but you don't never hit anything in the news about them, trying to build houses for people living on the streets, so they can afford. It seems like every year or the year or maybe the years to come that your little small efficiency is running, you anywhere between 350 and $300 a month knowing that it only should be only 250 to 200 dollars a month. Far as the value of human life is concerned. It seems to me more people are greedy rather than trying to help somebody with a place to stay. Even when you come down to the shelters, and then I guess you have to learn how to get along. With some of your peers at the shelter and sometimes they don't happen all the time because everybody's stressed, you know, everybody's going through a lot of turmoil, you know, getting shut doors here and shut doors there. And then at the end of the day, everybody can power their frustrations. That's hard to do really, to deal with, on an everyday basis at you. Come down here. I feel that If I had a good chance the baby to really speak my mind, one of my famous. I mean, one of my dreams is it's a baby to be in Washington DC and to be able to stand up there with that president of that Washington, what you call him, but he's like the president and the White House. I want to be able to sit in his chair. Not to be the president of the United States, but the sit back and tell everybody what truly needs to be done. We had to put value. Can the human life because all I'm seeing is that Farsi HMA is concerned housing. They will not accept you. If you have a criminal background they saying you don't have a right to be able to have a place because you don't got in trouble. You could go to any organization out here when they talk about the United Way, was supposed to be the good hands, people that we come together to help you. But then when you call down and you ask them that, you need a place and you're trying to get some money to maybe to play the deposit or something like that there. Turning you down, you're being forced to go to these temporary eggs, was only pay you $30 a day, less than that. And that's all it is, is eating money. I mean, basically, from what I see is that these programs that they have out here. They get money, the government that money, or the government give these people money to fund these programs, but rather than to take that money and actually put it off into a real housing unit for the ones who live on the street. They take it in and putting their own pockets and doing whatever they're doing with it. Because of that the case, then these shelter wouldn't be here. We all have a place to stay. I don't get me wrong. There's some people out here who likes to do. They little drugs, get high blow, the little money can't get along with nobody. Hey, you know, I can understand that happens out here, but we can't make that as of a justification to, to not help. The multitude of people who really truly is trying to do something for themselves and get themselves back on their feet and trying to get a place. Because every time that Hear something about housing or they said that somebody always coming out and they talking about drugs, this drugs that drug this well, really tired of hearing about that. You don't say it because they're all the seems to me and you just making that in his excuse, just an excuse to to say you're not going to do nothing for nobody. Well, if you getting all this money, then what are you doing? I mean Salvation Army. Yes, they got a nice spot here or whatever the case may be. But you got a lot of people who don't wash. Don't take care of themselves. They stink at me as Very bad far as I'm concerned. If the health is the health and Food and Drug Administration came down here. They would have to shut this place down because it's in Yerevan to be trying to live a certain things like that, but we can't make that as an excuse to try to help the ones who do watch their body. I'll keep themselves clean. Let me tell you something about the human body. The human body. It works. It sleeps. It does everything that the brain tell her to do. But if when you're homeless out here, you walking these streets trying to figure out a place where you going to either rest your head or just take a rest, your body can only go for so long and then after that, you might end up falling asleep in the bus, stop, but the only thing you're going to wake up to us cops. And if they telling you, if you don't move on, you're going to get trespass, you know, there's many a homeless people that I have met when I was in jail or in the county jail downtown here that were just basically been, you know, arrested because they were at the wrong place, trying to get some rest not hurting anybody. But you gotta understand these are human. They got to go to sleep, eight know you women in the world can stay up 24 hours a day for 365 days. A year. It's simply impossible. We got to have a place to rest. The body needs this, but it seems like people try to overlook these type of things and I'll never I'll never understand it, you know. Basically far as jobs are concerned, you know, I all the time be downtown. I see these construction, guys, building these big buildings and pictured on the railroad tracks or, you know, doing a whole bunch of things. Make it good money or whatever the case may be. But who says that I got to have a college degree to will Barrel dirt back and forth to the truck. So he could do what he want. I mean I could be making this is good enough money, you know, I can't even afford to go to school. How am I going? Go to school about homeless out here. Hi, my don't baby to be able to sort out certain things that I need to do because I can't even rest my head. I'm just sitting up here, worried about wash rag and some soap or how I'm going to clean my body. I'm worried about things that you necessarily the Necessities that you have to have on an everyday level. So if you don't have these type of things, it can really deter you from your ultimate goal. Unless somebody truly helps you and push you in a place to stay when you can. Rest your hair and you can think and you could do what you need to do in order to make it out here. But nine times out of 10 every day that I wake up. I got to walk a country mile, every time I get 10 miles down the road. I'm hungry again. I gotta find somewhere to eat or if I gotta just take a leak or take a crap. I got to figure out what a bathroom is or I might be trespassing. There's a lot of places that will simply let you use your bathroom. You got to sneak in it's not everybody that's out here on these streets want to be out here on these streets. Now by the grace of God, I had landed me a job. And that is that still doesn't give me no credibility by having this job. Why? Because a lot of people that have told have dealt with know that I have a job, but have they still offered me a place to stay knowing that? I got some money coming that I can pay him. No, it wants to see the greenback's first. It's the world that we live in its greed. It's about power. It's about Authority. Nobody is really looking at the actual matter of trying to figure out the solutions. I listen to a lot of talk radio's. No, I've been to a lot of meetings for homelessness and went to a board meeting when Brian Davidson. Yaeko North Northeast. Ohio. Coalition for the homeless, the trying to get them out of project, he can get them down here. But you know, what is it all for? If not, that's going to be done on West 25th. Oh West 25th there, right? When you get across the Detroit bridge and you're going towards your left as you go down towards the market, you take the, you know, turn your head to the left and notice. They used to be some chmm houses there, but now, they wiped them all out. What happened to all them, people. Have fun. Probably on the street. I think we need to be fighting for each, and every individual who's homeless, or has a felon background. We need to be fighting. And in the snow, love needs to be. It needs to be said, A right to live. We have a right to live. We shouldn't be who said that we got to come out and be directly on the street and sleep. Right. On the curb. We have a right to a bed. Just like everybody else. Do we have a right to privacy just like everybody else do? What are we going to start talking about? The real issues here? Because I don't never here when I'm listening to other people. Oh, I remember how I used to be and what's happening now, but this is all that you hear from. All this time. Nobody at least we'll be drawing a certain things have been, you know, done to try to help a little bit far as voicemail. But, you know, they got this voicemail now, right? And you can leave messages and I mean, or somebody can call leave a message for you and stuff like that. But what good is it going to do? If you're not getting the message that you ought to lie here? A place to live. I mean I have talked to got messages on my email on the internet and I still haven't had anything to tell me that. Hey, Bo I'm going to have me a place to stay. My whole objective is to have a bathroom just like you but I'm getting the bathroom. No, I had to walk into a situation a very hostile situation at the shelter because I don't get along with a few people and everybody's looking at anybody and you know a way that you just couldn't appreciate on the everyday level but I tasted because I got no choice but to take it right now. I really don't want to go in there, you know, but I'm going and I try my best to deal with the problem that I'm going through. But will they ever be a day where somebody were really step up to the plate and really help somebody? I doubt it. I don't really think that's going to happen because we live in a system. That's too much greed and too much power. You got to have you know, you got to have that real estate. You gotta buy this much land as you can, you know, and then look what Cleveland Clinic, David Clarke, gunto down, everything that used to be a place for low-income housing over there, just to build a better hospital to make more money. I understand it for health reasons, but I don't think but you're hurting somebody. The same time you're helping somebody. I don't believe in stuff like that and believe it. You're going to do a project have a project to replace something that you took down and help folks to continue to keep going. That's the name of that tune. But these things, you don't hear nothing about, you know, I used to write in the paper for the Grapevine, which is for the bryant-davis, northeast, Ohio Coalition for the homeless, and he wouldn't, even let me write certain things. You know, it's certain things that it needs to You said it needs to be done and my ultimate goal is for this tape or for my voice to be right in the mayor's ear. I mean, ears with Pioneers were 350 watts in his ears. I want that the pump it in this Headroom strong. Then I won't that take forward it to Washington along with the speakers to. So they can absolutely here. The importance of the real issues. I don't really want to hear anything about the deficit. I don't want to hear. Anything about the arms race, I don't want to be here. Anything that don't have no real value to human life. I mean these people they sit back and they devote themselves hike and pay, you know what I'm saying? It shows you that it doesn't really mean anything, for the lower man because the Lord man is, if that's the case, then how come they couldn't vote to have us have a place to stay? The prices and everything is too outrageous for a person, look that's living out here. Who's 55 to 60 years old, who needs a nursing home. I can take you right now. So you have some people who are in wheelchairs running around here outside all night long. The government has shut down. All the mental hospital that used to be because they cut the funding, how you going to cut the funding over somebody who's mentally incline and can't really do for himself, but To be looked after and when you cut the money like that, for somebody who needs to be looked after, you really saying to yourself that you really don't give a damn about this person. Hell with that, we could take this money and put it over here. We'll just throw them out of the street. You know, this is the kind of world that I'm seeing that we live in about greed and materialistic in power. And that's the reason why it look, the Cleveland Ohio. It's mainly wonder what the 676, fifth one on the biggest city in Ohio, and all we got is one. In shelter for no more than about maybe I don't know. A thousands, maybe three hundred thousand, thirteen hundred guys somewhere that I don't know. Some may be less than that for what? I know. But look it's only one shelter. What happens to all the ones? Who wait in there. What about the ones who sleep in a little mate? Who little chicks on a little boxes or somewhere around up in the curb. Do you think? I mean, there's anybody care that they might not wake up the next day or did y'all? Anything about the homeless man that was found dead in the garbage bed because he folded up that night. Did anybody hear about these little incidents? No, because they had, they wasn't important enough for anybody really worn enough to make a change. That's why, but when the president gets shot or giant kept checks himself into a rehab, everybody knows, you know, somebody with some super stardom, that maybes was highlight with the media and all this, they get the grant, the grant, the Grand Ballroom treatment, but when it comes to the low man on the totem pole, he gets nothing. And regardless of whether this person doesn't have any educational background or or some kind of college degree or anything in that fashion and they say, if you don't get with technology will be left behind, but I don't believe in that. I've been leaving that. They can have as many of jobs outside of working with a computer because we're human beings. We still use our hands, our feet, not miles to do a whole bunch of things. So, I computer. Remember, we created the computer, so we could take the computer and put it back in the garbage, too. What would the value is? It's not the computer. It's the human life. I was talking to a guy today and it was a marker Mike and I really I guess I'm really kind of happy for me to send because some rich guy offered to put this man in a thousand dollar-a-month, place ties in the dormitory and now he's going to school. And I was just telling a friend of mines that I think it was wrong for that for that individual only help one individual when I feel that he could, at least help the multitude. And while we were riding around, I showed how this could have been done. You could have started a program, where has some schooling. We're the ones who wanted to want to help themselves. Could have walked their hair 11:50 dozens, you know, but everybody gets a lucky break, but I kind of wish that it would have been more on a higher scale than that. Some people might get lucky and get themselves together, but we know every day, we wake up this homelessness out here and of problems, not truly being solved. As far as the ones who do the rugs and things like that. Thank, you know, we can't really help them to going to continue to kill themselves, but we can't help the ones who want to help themselves and that's, you know, that in the ones that that's out here is trying to do better for themselves. I think we need to fight the landlords and all these these price gouging on the rent. I think we need to come up with laws to make sure it stays at a certain level. I don't think no one should walk or be on the streets, especially in the cold night or no place to take a bath or even use the bathroom. Think about that. This this get that problem solved. Don't want to hear nothing about the deficit or the Dow Jones or anybody's computer or anything in that fashion. I don't want to hear none of that. I want to hear things that actually being done to cut the rate down or people coming down to the Salvation Army, or to 2100 Lakeside. Yeah, that's precisely was not happening right now. You've been out here for how long? Well, me. Basically. I've been out here, basically my whole life because what I mean by out here is that I never really had no real stable place. I was bounced around in my earlier days. You're on the streets then and off the street, but you got to remember, I was young. I'm like a sheep without a Shepherd. There was no one to guide me and I was kind of wild at that time, but see as we Older. We get wiser and we don't have that playful mentality or to do the things that we do, you know, when we were younger. Now, all I want to do is have stability and structure. Just get me a place, be content, you know, baby to wash my hands when I get ready to go to sleep, when I get ready to I can't do these things right now. I got to go ahead of my couple of bags on my back. Can I got to go deal with some people? I don't want to be dealing with but I put up with it because I'm trying to make myself, get myself better than where I'm at. But bottom line is if you had to put up with the pressure, but it would be nice if somebody out here would take the pressure off and they have the means to take the pressure off. Seems like he's getting worse right now. Huh. Zedd. All you have to do is take a look in front of you and see that it's getting worse. I mean, all you got to do is just go, go go, look around, go downtown or go up in a community where they building up, all his other stuff instead of surely tearing everything else down and ain't nobody talking about helping. Nobody these days, only worried about it hiding under. Look at Mayor Michael White and City. Counsel fighting over how to budget or the money's going to be spent. I mean, yeah, they put it off into the streets and the sewers and but they don't really put it off of that because they did we wouldn't have all these pipe break, break it with water and flooding up everything. I mean, Common Sense tells you that the people who is running the show are doing it for themselves to gain, any kind of political fight is because if they're taking somebody's money out, their pockets are going to fight to make sure it stays and that's what the real squabbles all. Oh about because it's not about the people, it's about what they could get for themselves. Why else would you build gun Arena and Jacobs Field and say the hell with the schools. Come on, nine times out of ten. It tells you right then? And there what time it is with the city. They want money. They want anything, they can to remain in power when you look downtown and you look at the society building or you look at to Terminal Tower or any of them, big bass buildings, you looking at Basically, it's like a big Monopoly board. You're looking at kingdoms, you know, you're looking at downtown to me. We can sit at your board boardwalk and Park Place, you know that all the billionaires, you know, the bulk of the money and and they wear the suit and ties and suitcase, very or business wise. And you got the cops there to make sure no Laura. Nobody homeless. Don't rest on their doorstep. I mean, these people have made themselves God and they either forgot who they are. You know I'm saying they're just humans just like a homeless man. Is they have to use the bathroom. They have to Peter had to do the whole nine yards far as a human body is concerned. Maybe they might have developer sylheti, but they still had to do the same thing and they have to go to sleep. So, you know, you never should treat nobody or exalt yourself over. Another human being, you should try to remain humble. But under the circumstances, I don't see anything out here for us getting bad. All I see is things getting worse and just like last year. Year when the Homeless was having a protest on the Square but instead of Michael White, which is supposed to be the man come down and try to back them up and get things together. So people can have place to you live. He comes down with a SWAT team that throws everybody in jail me, you know, you can see what kind of morals kids is these. People voted this man in, you know what I'm saying? So he does this kind of stuff to another human being and I tell me right then. And there. All right. That was Anthony ball. We had a little bit of difficulty with the end. See if we can see if we can get that finished up here. Nope. All right, that was Anthony ball. And he was really breaking it down for us. Basically letting us know. I think they're in the conclusion. He was just basically going to say that in the end. There's very little value. Value in human life these days. So we'll work on will probably play that one again and again in the future. That was, you know, that one really just really just gets, you know, hopefully there's a lot of y'all out there listening. We got a couple more interviews here. We're going to, we're going to move on to an interview. I did actually a year and a half ago with a man by the name of Hakeem Muhammad Ali and this interview was done down on Public Square. What name is Hakeem, Rahman, Ali and? I was had a great interest in the homeless people here in Cleveland. And I think it's the atrocity. How they've been doing done now? Because what's happened now is they're pushing them all into one unit and not giving them. Individuality is difficult for homeless people to rise out of the situation. They're in because they're caught up in a Dogma Circle and they don't have Any partnership for education or housing food? The food that is given to him like the like on Sundays here. I think this is a great program because this is a vegetarian meal and they should be eating, well, better than they are at the other places that they eat at. Not saying that the places that they have aren't well, but it's not well enough for homeless people. They need more vegetables, more vitamins are nutrients. I look at some of the places that they sleep at night and a lot of them are dangerous and then the police running from the safe places to dangerous places. So which is bad and they need to be kept into a more safe environment. Now that I hear that, the Salvation Army is going to take over the programs that they have for them, is going to be even more difficult for the guys that don't have proper ID. There are alcohol, addicted drug-addicted. And these people need Up to. So they have these problems. They're going to be even worse you off, because they're going to be out in the cold. So this year, the year 2000, when this new program start, you might have a lot of deaths between the homeless people, because they don't have nowhere to go. And I hear is December is supposed to take be taken over by the Salvation Army. That's that's what I heard. The one, the three sites that they have a A c and d are going to be moved into one side of 250 man building. That's what I hear and they're going to be really screen and scrutinize that come inside these places. So it's going to make it difficult for the guys that have drug-addicted problems that need help need to be cleaned up, get job. And I heard, they have to have a job to into the program. So that's going to be another problem. What about the guy that is unemployed? He's uneducated. He can't get a job. He has psychological. Problems. What about this guy? What do you do for him? So they need to be plans done for each and everybody because some guys are in a slump. They're not all bad. Some of these guys sometimes come out here on the street, couldn't pay the rent for one month. They've been working for seven years. Couldn't pay their rent. Got put some out and what now, they're homeless that's part of a problem. That's not part of a system. That's part of a problem because America itself has no plans for the homeless. They just walk over the poor, the poor stay poor and the rich get richer. So there has to be a plan. In America for the homeless people. I've traveled across the country and I've worked with homeless people from New York to California and everywhere I go. Now, they're tearing down places where they sleep safely and put them in the places where they can sleep dangerously, putting them into places. Where here's a guy that doesn't do the things that this guy does, and he's fault. Fallen victim to what? He don't like, you know, he has to sleep with the guys that using drugs and alcohol and he's just homeless because of a situation, not because of alcohol or drug addiction. So, you know, you got people, that's been burnt out here. People just lost family lost homes because of taxes, so it's different situations with different people. So and I think that mayor white himself need to come to a coalition for the homeless and sit down with the people that coordinate these homeless shelters. And see if they can come up with a better idea for people that are not under these restrictions of alcohol and drugs and people that are not in the factories people. They're good people. They're just poor. And I don't know. I just think America itself with as much money as America had as a much money. Is this spending on prisons? Ohio itself, has 31 prisons in the state. There's 368 per 100,000 black men and poor white men in this country incarcerated at one point six million and that right. Sixty-eight percent each year. So we the building more prisons for the rich people to get rich or we're building. More prisons to make Society safer. It's not making Society safer. What it's doing is taking poor white men and poor black men incarcerated for a length of time and they become out angry. Now, they're angry when they come out here again. Instead of working with their addictions. Here's a guy. He's still a loaf of bread and a pack of meat. Not even two dollars. You give them five to 15 years economically, that's not right. You make three thirty, three thousand to 60,000 off of that, man, each year depending on his medical condition. When you could have took the same 33,000 and put them in college, same 60,000, and put them in a rehab. Same 14,000 and put him in a job rehabilitation program. So, we're talking about, Erica using their money. Anyway, they want instead of using it for the people should be for the people and by the people that's why each state should be coming. Well and you educate yourself. How do what I get the figures from the figures come from a national statistics. You can go to the local library and find these statistics and it shows you where each state how much Much. They pay for each man. Now, depending on his medical condition, but you got guys in blind, AIDS addicted, you have guys that have high blood, diabetes need all kind of care around the clock, that takes a lot of different pharmaceutical medicines. So depends on his medical condition is anywhere from 12,000 to 60,000 a year. Depending some guys take heart pills in there. So you're talking about a very expensive. You and then you have to pay the cost of his cell that maintenance of that South cost money, the maintenance of the god cost money, but they're making a fine salary each year. So the prisoners should look live well, but now they're taking all the clothes out of prison, all the ways out of prison. All the education out of prison. I know in the state of New Jersey, they have no more Rehabilitation. They have no more education. So now it's just doing time. So if you get time, you just do time. It's no more. Of a man coming in and better himself to be better. You're right. Cause I'll New York, clicking down, more Attica. All these prisons have become more dangerous because of the things that they're taking away. So now the prisoners don't have anything to rely on. He has no network. No inmate father. Knowing you to told you, I these things that were profound for, the Prisoners has been taken away now, they need to consolidate with the states. So now they can have something for the prison. They have nothing for the prisoners. No more, not saying that, that is the first point. The first point for the poor let's let's get the poor off the street. That's it. Can we do that as a people?
