Our Special Collections include a number of materials created by and collected by journalists and radio enthusiasts. These collections document the work of local journalists, such as Drew Pearson, and reporters who have worked as foreign correspondents, such as Bill Gentile and Robert Nickelsburg. Our collections relating to journalism, mass communication, and radio history document the historical events and stories told by the materials themselves while also providing snapshots into the history of multi-format mass communication. John R. Hickman Collection

The John R. Hickman Collection consists of broadcast quality audio recordings of vintage radio news and entertainment programs spanning the 1920s through the 1970s collected by Hickman. The digitization of this collection is a work in progress.

Drew Pearson's Washington Merry-Go-Round

Andrew Russell (Drew) Pearson (1897-1969) was one of the most successful newspaper and radio journalists of his day. The collection presented here consists of the typescript of Pearson's syndicated Washington Merry-Go-Round column published between 1932 and 1969. 

Bill Gentile Photojournalism Collection

Bill Gentile was a reporter for the Mexico City News, a UPI correspondent, and Newsweek's Contract Photographer for Latin America and the Caribbean. This collection includes examples of his work from the 1970s-1990s, covering conflicts in Central and South America and the Middle East.

The Photographic Archive of Robert Nickelsberg

Robert Nickelsberg was a TIME magazine contract photographer for nearly thirty years, specializing in political and cultural change in foreign countries. This collection includes examples of his work from the 1980s-1990s documenting conflicts in Central and South America and Asia. All images owned and copyrighted by Nickelsberg.
