    Online Exhibits

    University Archives & Special Collections curates multi-format online exhibits, many in collaboration with American University students, faculty, and staff. These exhibits highlight the rich history of the university and also showcase our Special Collections. In most cases, our digital exhibits will link out to other websites and platforms used to create online exhibits.

    This project explores and celebrates the transgender experience at American University over the past several decades.

    Presidential Visits to AU

    Although there has never been a formal connection between American University and the White House, several U.S. Presidents have visited campus. This exhibit highlights the history of those visits.

    This timeline highlights key moments of change and transition in AU history and explores how student-led actions, faculty innovation, and the needs of a diverse community has driven AU forward since its inception.

    American University History Walk, 2020

    The History Walk is a self-guided tour, marking significant locations on campus that reflect AU’s rich and diverse history.

    American University History Walk, 2025

    This self-guided History Walk from the University Archives was created for the 2025 Inauguration of President Alger. Travel back in time and experience key moments and places that have shaped American University’s legacy. Explore the evolution of our beautiful campus with “then and now” comparisons.

    Black Activist Speakers at American University

    Many notable Black activists and Civil Rights icons have spoken on campus over the years. This exhibit highlights a very small sample of such speakers.

    Eagles in Action

    Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle

    This digital exhibit highlights the stories and memories of AU Alunmi collected in 2021.

    Family Weekend Scavenger Hunt

    Explore highlights from AU Archives & Special Collections through a virtual scavenger hunt where you can find the images or words hidden in archival materials. This exhibit is often used in combination with a physical exhibit during Family Weekend.

    Academics and Scholarship

    Over the years, AU's academic focus and priorities have ada[ted to reflect the culture of its time, the ideas of its leadership, and the desires of its student body. This exhibit examines the scholastic focus of AU from its origins through the modern day.

    A Visual History of Women at AU, 1900-1990

    Discover the history of American University's female student experience on the campus between 1900 and 1990 through selected photographs from the University Archives.

    AU Plaque Project

    The American University Project Plaque is a curated collection that documents the historic markers found on American University's Washington, D.C. campus which tell the story of the many events and endeavors that took place here.

    Influence of Slavery on American University

    This timeline explores the relationship of the founding of American University, including the history of the land, and its founder, Bishop John Fletcher Hurst, with the legacy of slavery in the U.S.

    Exploring Cuba

    Selected images of Cuba from the Latin American Visuals Collection and from the Jack Childs Collection. The Latin American Visuals Online Repository includes materials gathered by Latin Americanist scholars from multiple institutions.

    Developing Volunteers

    Explore the legacy of the Peace Corps experience. Volunteers develop a host nation, the host nation develops itself, and, in reciprocity, the host nation develops the volunteers.

    Answering the Call

    The Peace Corps and its Volunteers

    The Peace Corps Community Archive contains the stories of hundreds of Peace Corps Volunteers who have answered President Kennedy’s 1961 call. Learn about the experiences of Volunteers through their journals, letters, official paperwork, audio, and photographs created between 1961 and 2013.

    The Peace Corps Through the Decades

    Since its founding, thousands of Americans have served in dozens of countries as Peace Corps Volunteers. But neither the Peace Corps nor its Volunteers have remained the same. Explore how the Peace Corps and Volunteers' experiences have shifted as they have worked towards the same goals in a changing world.

    Services Asked For, Given, and Received

    The Peace Corps’ mission succeeds when all parties benefit from the Volunteers’ projects. Ideally, the U.S. government is able to further diplomatic goals abroad, the partner government gains infrastructure, and the Peace Corps Volunteer knows they have made others’ lives better. In practice, services asked for, services given, and services received were often unaligned.
