You are listening to frost radio. It's September 11th. 2001. Many of you are probably already aware of. The series of bombings that have gone on this morning. Both World Trade Centers appear to have collapsed in the Pentagon appears to be on fire. We have had this show planned for at least a week. And do you want to Give us an idea. What we want to do here at game or what our approaches this morning. We still want to thank everybody that came out, September, the 4th and and it all their support. And everybody that testified at the hearings. We want to give them a congratulation in a Cell flick Applause, right? We want to let everybody know that we will not surrender now or tomorrow because our future is now and what is labor companies have been doing and practicing is going to be our past and the lock is going to be our future. They labor places 4:30 in the morning that sometimes 6:00 at night and don't be sent out or go out at 5:30 in the morning and Reach your destiny destination until late after 6:00 at night, because of the poor Transportation, the poor communication between these people because they think that your life is not that important, their life is. So we don't want to be a economic number to these people. We want to be diligent workers. So once we established the lock, then we can become diligent. Workers for diligent people. Mmm-hmm. We don't want to be treated just because we're poor, we say, oh well, just give us a hand out today. No, we want to be able to have a job where we can last not only today. But next month next year, next five years. So we'll be gainfully employed. Sure anything you want to add today at John or your impressions of the hearings and they all rally beforehand. Actually, I think Rally, we had went pretty well that we had a very well. I think we had a high turnout for the hearings and for the rally, both considering we had a few councilman there at the rally. We also had some of the news media, some Plain Dealer. We got a lot of good. We got a lot of good feedback on the hearings to from certain temp agencies calling calling to the Northeast, Ohio, Coalition for the homeless. in particular one, Sam lucarelli called Brian, who runs his works for the northeast Ohio, Coalition for the homeless tried to call him and contact him before the hearings and asked, if we could meet with him before the hearing city council, which was actually at that point, it was unimaginable because we had already, we already had two hearing set up for quite a while quite some time by then. And now Yes, I mean it wasn't possible. I don't know what he was trying to do. I have have no clue. Really. I think in my opinion, I think he was trying to keep his name and the name of Minuteman out of the out of the picture. I guess he feels and a lot of the other temporary agencies feel as if they supposedly is Hakeem said, do us a favor by putting us out to work each day. I mean, that's to be honest. That's not true. They're not doing us a favor. If anything. They're holding us back. Hmm. I mean, if they wanted to do us a favor, what they do is instead of having us or instead of signing a contract with the employers that they send us to in the companies. They send us to the states. They can't, the company can't hire was hired us with within 90 days. They go ahead and they'd She said, we're language that contract and go ahead and say, yeah, you know, if the company wants to hire you, you know, go for it. I mean they if they really thought they were going to do some benefit or if they thought they were going to do something for us. I mean, working us at 5:15 an hour, which is federal minimum wage is. I mean, I personally, I think it's ridiculous. There's no one out there who can live on that amount. As I mean, anyone out there. Who's anyone, anyone out there? Who's listening? Just ask yourself? I mean, how are you going to pay your bills at 5:15 an hour? How are you going to do? Afford to buy food for your family or even live, even live for yourself to pay rent, pay your bills. It's unimaginable. It's just, it's ridiculous. What these temporary agencies are doing out here. And I think what the hearings that we had. I think they went really well in a positive manner that city council did listen to us and I'm sure they're going to in the end term address. A lot of these issues. We brought up the temporary agencies are portraying as being a benefit to us, but which is more or less a downfall to us and holding us back. I hope and in the, in the near future, my hopes and dreams and wishes are that these temporary agencies aren't if they aren't shut down there at least boycotted. And that the deal was, she is able to go ahead with their commitment to the people and to the workers that they could start a community hiring Hall and we can get it going and get it going soon.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think and I guess, just some last thoughts on that. Those hearings we had about 130 115 or approximately 130 people turn out to the hearings 18 day. Laborers, testify at the hearings, take enormous risks on to do. So in terms of facing possible, retribution from these agencies. And I think it was a tremendous success. I think both the hearings and the rally Beforehand really Justified. All the work that we've done in the past year to lead up to those hearings and certainly has energized, a lot of us to continue on on this path on the struggle to address the needs. And as long as as these agencies are still here and out there basically abusing and exploiting the workers that delay. Is it going to be here as well fighting on their behalf? I know both of you and that in the aftermath, I guess. Well, let me just say a couple of positive things before I get into that. I'd say one of the most important developments is been the support that we've gained both from local political officials politicians as well as the support we've gained from Organized labor. As a result of these hearings. I don't know how many people I've talked to who are just amazed at the stories that were told at the hearings and really were won over. Some people who were early a little bit skeptical. As to what the issues were here. They weren't really sure. They wanted to jump on board with the community hiring Hall have supposedly. Come on board full force. 11 Man, by the name of Jerry Gordon, whose works with the Labour party on Wednesday, asked all the mayoral candidates, whether they would support a publicly funded Community hiring Hall, and this was at the AFL-CIO forum for male candidates, all of them, with the exception of one as reported by the Plain Dealer and as attested to, by some Witnesses said that, they would indeed support a community, a publicly funded Community hiring Hall. The one who didn't say she would support the hiring Hall. Commissioner. Jane Campbell has since been pressured by some people working on her committee. And as well as AFL-CIO to reconsider her stance on that they, they did. And in fact, her campaign did. In fact say that she would help Spearhead. Um, efforts to raise private funding, for Community hiring Hall, but I do think that we're going to be approaching her and asking her to clarify her position, especially this coming Saturday and this is something that we want to call out. Everybody out there. All those who are listening who are supporters of the diello, see who are day laborers who are Viet to get involved with Addie, loc to come out. Out and show up for this mayoral candidate Forum. That's going to be held at Tri-C at the Metro Campus in the main auditorium at 1:30 p.m. And that's this coming Saturday at Tri-C at the Metro Campus main auditorium at 1:30 p.m., We're going to try and get a big turnout there of the DL DL o.c. And its members. And we're also going to Really hold the mayoral candidates accountable for the things they say, and the promises they make. So that after this coming election, we can hold them to their words and that's really the DLC. I think we can all confidently. Say isn't going to go out there and actually endorse a candidate we're going to work with all the candidates, get them up to date on these issues because whether they win or they lose, we want them to be in a position where they They can help out in the struggle for the day, laborers, who are in the city of Cleveland. And so it may if they do win, we want to build a movement that can hold them accountable for their promises regardless of who does win. Anyways, some in developments that did occur. Well, let me just continue their a couple people. We want to thank our or some some actually good developments that we're looking forward to working. People were looking forward to working with our the UAW and Warren Davis has come out in favor of a community. Hiring Hall as reported by Jerry Gordon of the Labour party. We've also gay Gotten a commitment to have meetings from the head of the buildings trades unions. We've also had a commitment to have a meeting with The Machinist. And as usual, our biggest supporter within organized labor has been can ill, Go vhere, Local 10. That's the hotel employee union hotel and restaurant employee union with that said, some of the important. Developments that have had happened since the hearings have a little bit more of a - twist to it. But really, I want to highlight this because it I think it demonstrates the commitment and the effort that both you Hakeem, and John Davidson here have made as well as other D loc members have made in the, the sacrifices that they've made to stand up in solidarity. You want to talk about some of the retaliation that's been going on. Since since the hearings. Yeah, since we had two hearings up quite a few guys that have been back to Minuteman Labor Ready, trip away, and always Staffing. And a lot of these guys have not been sent out to work because of their commitment to the struggle. And I myself, Has been planted as a Marked Man because of my commitment to the struggle. My picture is been put up in different places and and I've been let to know that I wouldn't be getting set out of a lot of these temporary agencies. But if I had to live upon a temporary agency, I wouldn't starve to death because there's a lot of other things that we can do in our communities. Admit, I mean, I'm not telling everybody stop using temporary agency right now. If you don't have anything else but constrict yourself to the use of these agencies. I know it's difficult to stop when you need economics to live on, but you have to constrict yourself somewhere game, some discipline where you don't have to use these agencies each and every day. If you use them three days a week, two days. Go find you a job. Fill out applications across the city. It's very important that you get yourself up out of that system because systematically it will destroy you. If I give you from 23 to 27, 28 dollars a day and you takes you 15 16 17, 18 dollars, and live plus car fare, then it's difficult to come out of that situation because now I got you depending upon me like the use of drugs, if you use this agency. And you can't see yourself above water then it's it's time for you to change and do something else and that's the go out and ground pound and try to find something that will gainfully employed. You find employer that will employ you because we don't have to use these agencies every day. I mean, they they think we do because they have a five fifteen dollar job. Sometimes six dollar job and they take half of it. So Let's kind of get ourselves out of being dependent upon something. That's not really there. It's actually a Dream, It's far-fetched. It's a facade. So what we have to do is show them that we have strength, and power and strengthen organization, and that we won't tolerate their abuse anymore. We won't tolerate what they pay us. We won't tolerate the way they talk to us. We won't tolerate the way they treat us. We won't tolerate the way they stepovers won't tolerate the way they He was out in all these far-fetched places sharding and Macedonia and Twinsburg and not pick us up until 4:00 in the morning. We won't tolerate these things anymore. We want to be treated with dignity. We wanted to treat it like a human being and we want to be treated with respect and we want to be treated fairly. All we want to do is earn our own living and our own ways. Right on. Yeah, and the DL 0 C is going to be working and struggling to put together a community hiring Hall, including all the nuts and bolts issues in the coming months. Until as we work on this, I've if there are employers who right now are out there, listening to this show, who are capable and willing, to help provide. Work for the people who are currently, not given the opportunity are prevented from working because they dared to speak up at these hearings. And we have a list of five people who this has happened to and each of these five people. Are hard working people, people who have worked for years and also people who are willing to stand up and have a sense of dignity about themselves. And after we get the building, we can have a better format where we can start soliciting these companies. So these people can change from these days laboring places over to de la. Mmm, because we don't want the money to go into the company. We want the money to go into the person's pocket. Now, let me ask you this.

This is something I'm I've been thinking about it in terms of the community hiring Hall is a at that it be a separate organization from D Lock in that, that it essentially be a partnership with members on the board that a, it's a nonprofit organization with a board that consists of local clergy people who are employers out there in the community are representatives for the employers. People who are in nonprofit organizations who are currently running Services, providing services for the population or city of Cleveland Employment Services as well as members of organized, labor and clergy who are out there who support the cause and Community activists and public officials. We've already got I think a commitment from a real solid backing of people who can come on this board. I think it's important that day. Laborers have a saying in the the policies and the directions at this company goes. But I think that at least in my opinion at least D Lock needs to remain independent so that we can consist consistently work as advocates for the day laborers and then the community hiring Hall needs to find ways in which they can kind of work in a neutral position. In between the workers and the employers to connect them in a way, that's not operating in the same system that it is. Now, in the sense that it's all about, all about mistreating the workers, but I think both employers and workers are going to benefit from this community. Community hiring Hall in a way that that these temp agencies providing services that these temp agencies, just just can't aren't willing to provide no question. Just like you said, it could They independently because D lock will fight for the rights of the workers and the community hired whole will hire the workers. Make sure that they gainfully employed and I'm not talking about taking a guy and paying for a day. I take a guy and give them nine dollars an hour, ten hours a day. That's ninety dollars a day. That's all, I'm fine. But What I would like to see happen is to make sure that this guy can consistently work from 30, 30 days to 60 days. No more than actually 90 days into a company, put 90 days his life into a company and make sure that he'd be gainfully employed. Mhm. And that's what we want to see happen because we don't want to practice the same thing that these other companies practice, they get you there and say, oh nice, stay here with 90 days. We're going to get you hired in and working for 67 days. And the next day you come in, is another guy in your place. We don't want that to happen. Well, I think what we want ideally is to have people come into our agency and to our community hiring hall and then get hired on as permanent workers or or ideally. I think, what we could do is even some of these jobs that are inherently temporary in the sense like cleaning the Stadium's, right? That there's only What eighty one or two games a year at the Indian stadium? Jacobs Field, and eight games a year at the Brown Stadium, what? Another 41 games at the Gund Arena, but then there's all these concerts. And I guess what I'm trying to say, if you're getting my drift here, there's that it's

almost a semi permanent position but it is, it is like, you know, it is. Yeah. There are a lot of people that work for Jacobs Field. Going to bring And brown stated that are permanent workers. But most of the cleanup workers are temporary workers. Yeah, because this is this is how I see this. They speed these people out of here, in three and four hours and economical cut them close to belly nothing. So if you have a permanent worker you can get him to do a permanent job. For more money. Mmm, so he don't get caught short of his dollar neither. Yeah, and I think we want what we want to do is provide we want and basically win over the contracts that these temporary agencies have currently. And I think what we want to do is find that work in ways that's going to make that those jobs jobs that can bring people up and out of poverty. Bring people into a setting where they can afford their own homes. They can lift themselves up and live with dignity and respect just even, you know, as long as there's people who are who and there will always be people who are needed and required to clean up these stadiums, as long as we have them that, we need to make sure that those workers are treated with dignity and respect and paid fairly for the labor that they do. You have something. I'll go ahead and address that real quick, then. As far as the, the wages in the pay-go, for cleaning up the Brown Stadium, the Indians stadium Gund, Arena and all that. I've spoke with some of the part-time employees who are employed by the Browns organization by the Indians, and by Gund Arena and a lot of the as you could put a part-time employees. For instance, one of my know for a fact. He's he works for the Browns organization. He works part-time. Works about 12 to 15 hours a week, but his Pace starts at nine dollars an hour and he's giving benefits. Hmm, on top of that, where you get these guys do the temporary day, laborer agencies who are sent out there, making no more than $6 an hour. No, benefits. They're rushed in, like Hakeem said rushed out. Yeah, you know, I mean they're paid for and five hours to make what I mean. 30 dollars after taxes, are going to be lucky to Lucky to take, 23 to 25 dollars home. Yeah. In a four-hour period. But yet they have to get down to the Temporary agency at 1:00 in the afternoon to be signed up and they don't start working till 9:00 10:00 at night. That's you know, that's eight nine. Ten hours of their time wasted 30 sitting around doing nothing. They're not giving their ticket or quit, their job assignment as a temporary agencies want to State until you know, sometimes 6:00 7:00 8:00 in the evening. Yeah, or they're not, you know, they're not set set over to the job. We're told they can't arrive at the job before 9:00 in the evening. Sure, you know Simon, where are they going to go? And what are they going to do? Are they going to go all the way back home? Just to turn around? Have to go all the way back to the Brown Stadium. If someone lives out and say, Cleveland Heights more, you know, Mayfield Heights. I mean, they've got to go all the way home. Then turn around, come all the way back. That's ridiculous. It's a waste of their time. I mean, it's just it's it's flat-out. Utterly utterly. Ridiculous. What the temporary agencies, how they're using the stadium and the stadiums and Stadium contracts. To basically run. I mean to basically run temps into the ground, you know, waste your time by.

I am cares run by Marsha tolls, which does a training does training programs for work in machine shops and all kinds of industrial work. Another thing that we are looking in doing is getting a, there's currently a group working. And in finding Bank services for the Working Poor and developing Bank services for the Working Poor and we may be able to develop a benefit program through our community hiring Hall where when people save a certain sum of money that actual in an account that actual money is matched by this group. And unfortunately, I can't remember their name right off hand, that is interested in getting involved with what we're doing here. It also looks like we may be getting a Fiscal Agent fairly soon. There are several groups have expressed interest in being our Fiscal Agent for the community hiring Hall. We've also been working on developing. I think the proposal right now is that we develop into an independent nonprofit organization. We start off with a Fiscal Agent. Agent but that we set up a time table in which case, this community hiring Halls spun off and becomes an independent organization. Fairly soon, Jos impermanence city, councilman, Jose. San Fermin is working on, arranging meetings with Larry Dolan. The owner of the Cleveland, Indians to talk about ways in which these publicly-funded sports facilities, can provide what we'd like to call living and see live. Wages, but in the very least, Fair wages wages that that are much higher than what people are currently receiving. These are some of the things we were just talking about. So that these jobs that are provided by these publicly funding Sports, Arenas are in fact jobs that can lift people out of poverty and out of being in a kind of state of permanent desperation. So, a lot of great things are coming together. If you're out there and you're interested, you are, let's say you are involved. Anybody out there involved in the Mandel school? No. School for nonprofit organizations. I'm probably getting the name wrong here and if you're interested in participating in this or or if you're working in the legal field and interested in providing pro bono work in terms of helping us, get this nonprofit agencies set up and writing the bylaws. And hopefully, that if you want to be part of the DLC that you can, maybe give us a small donation, because we're nonprofit organization, but it costs money to make buttons and flyers. So, So I will be out in the neighborhoods today and tomorrow. I'll be at Cleveland State. But all this week. I'll be out walking the streets, not riding the buses. I'll be walking from 22nd, to 55th 55th to 93rd. So, people always see me in the neighborhoods. People have been stopping me in the street asking me about the DLC. A lot of people think people come become immune to Poverty but you're not and I'm not saying that all rich people abuse poor people. So I was quoted one time saying, oh, rich, people don't just go around booze and poor people. I didn't say that. I said some rich people don't have the right to Exploit poor people just because they're poor. That's what I said. I didn't say that always people abused, poor people because there are a lot of rich people that helpful people. A lot of rich people help poor people. What I said was rich people that exploit poor, people are wrong. That's what I said. And I said, they don't have to poor. People don't have to be exploded just because the poor because Rich people get exploited to but what I'm saying is that, if we are in these situations, if we're needy, if we are people that need a better life, such as economics because we all need economics to live. And if we need to find gainful employment, I think that you'll be interested in a DLC. Yes. I want us to try to constrict our uses of. I know we just can't cut it off all over night. I know we can't say, well, I'll stop going to mini man today and starve to death. No, I'm not saying I'm saying, constrict your use of these employment agencies or use an agency that has your best interest at heart because of poor blacks and poor whites in this country are the barbarous is this country. So, Want to be exploited because we're doing all the work. What we want to do is become gainfully employed and have a decent living wage so we can economically take care of our houses. That's what I would like and we can do that if we organize and stick together. Yes, well, and it seems to me one other. Who are experienced in throwing benefits shows and doing fundraising on holding dinners and things like that? If you, if you are in a position where you think you could help out in that way and help us fund. Some of the things that need to be done in terms of both the filing fees that will need to put in place for setting up our organization, as well as the fees that will need just The money will need just to keep a daily operations running that can always be helpful. This is about impart money. And if we can, if we can start off with a stronger footing, and we're talking about real serious financing here. We're not We're not talking necessarily. We are talking from everything from the 50 Cent for the cost of the button to the dollar to help pay for the Flyers and the buttons to the thousands of dollars that or hundreds of thousands of dollars that we are actually trying to raise to set up this community hiring Hall and we're going to go to all the pain. The sources were funding, may be available. We're putting together a very Plan, I think a solid plan. We're going to have a board of directors. That's going to have some very big names on it. People who are very responsible in this community have a long track record of working in this community. You're not working here with a fly-by-night organization, you're working with people who are trying to do this thing and do it. Right? Everybody's jobs situation here in the city of Cleveland. You may have a secure job now, but if they can get a worker coming in there at 5:15 an hour to replace whatever work you're doing. Doing now and I guarantee you, you're replaceable. No matter what you're doing out there because there are people who are highly skilled out there who are desperate, including, and this is something that this is one of the reasons right here. You want to just briefly, say that story actually Dan. I've had that happen to myself. I was working out at iMac Enterprises. Matter of fact, I don't under teeth and Snow Road and minute man. I don't know how they arranged it, but they got a Packed with iMac. And I was making $8 an hour. Well, I came into work one evening on a night shift and I was told I'd been replaced and I said, excuse me. They said well, yeah, we call it for a temp through minute, man. He apparently he's got his toe motor, license. And we only have we only have to pay so much for him. And it's now we don't have to pay for the benefits and all that. Believe me anyone out there with a full-time job. You are replaceable. No matter how long you been at any job. I've seen metaphor lose their jobs after. Thirty years.
