So today we're going to be talking about some of her work experience is and what it is like to live in a shelter and how some of the social programs are working, especially for the women who are living in the shelters downtown, but throughout the show. And asking any of you all out there who can help Linda find a job that pays $7 Dollars or more and we're basically doing some open bidding on the air and whoever can provide the job that pays the most with the most amount of benefits will be able to hire Linda at the end of the show. You know, how many people who are homeless are working for these temporary agencies and I think it's even I think people are even more surprised to hear about the fact that women. Who are homeless are also working in these jobs. Can you tell us some about you know, the places you work and what that's like, yeah, then Jacobs Field is hellish. You're out doing all this weird weather. Atlas plating hell, it's hard. You seem to think if you find your job, you can get off the street. So easily, when landlords, won't $700 you have to live, you have to survive. You have that personal things. You have to get your gas, and all these other things that are essential, and it's just hard. Sure. Now you said, 700 you meaning for the security deposit first? Yeah. Yeah kind of hard to come up with that kind of money.

And we're going to talk in a few moments about the difficulties of doing that. And for example, like, if the women are sitting there in the waiting room, and the men are sitting there in the waiting room, other differences in the types of jobs, that women are going to wear the treatment, they get at the temp services, or You hope you wanted to pick you up. You're one of the favorites. Oh, mmm. No, but it seems like the job seem to get more for men but it's at the same time. They're the ones that's making it the big business that it is 20. That's what we're looking for. Getting moving away from those minimum, wage jobs. So that Linda can get out of being homeless. Why is it so hard to get out of being homeless working? These minimum wage? Abs. Did you like playing craps? And you don't know, how can you go tell the landlord save the money and then say, well, I didn't get out this week with landlords cannot want to listen to that. I mean, you never know and then you could get the job and you be doing it for months and they cancel the contract. So, mmm, nothing's, nothing's in writing. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. And you I've heard it said that sometimes people will, I guess the, the way, the temporary agencies lay out their contracts with companies is that if you have to work there for 90 working days, I think full-time non-stop uninterrupted. So essentially more than three months, because 90 days is essentially three months, but you're not counting the weekends there with the 90 days and then and only then are they allowed to take you on as permanent? Hawaii has 22 there. Yeah. Thanks. By the way, to get rid of you. And yeah, that is 90 days. So, tell me what happens at least a catch-22. You think you, you think you got a job, you think you're set? You think you're gonna be able to do the things that you needed to do and something goes wrong or something about your attitude, or they find a reason to get rid of you. So they don't have to hurry. Okay, and they don't have to have the deal with the giving you that permanent stuff when they could just keep on. Dealing with the agency. That's all you can always be replaced and I don't care how good you work. You can be replaced. Hmm. And so that's the catch.

The light that you need computer skills, these days to get these these these high paying jobs. Sure. And like, you know, there's a lot of talk but it's a kind of technological Revolution and how everything's gone high-tech. Okay, so we got a suggestion that's not quite going to make it as far as we're actually looking for employers who are actually hiring out there. But we do have one suggestion. CTC data entry. A Linda doesn't have computer skills, but let's put it this way to a lot of the jobs that you've worked at. If those those companies would hire you directly you'd be getting paid probably ten or twelve dollars an hour. Right? So let's let's let's put it this way. I think there are a lot of computer skills needed and jobs and data entry, and all that. But let's be real. There's a lot of jobs that people. People are doing out there in this city. Today. They have to do manual labor still and they have to do with plating work, making Plastics injection, molding Landscaping. I mean, I could just list off about 30 job punch, press operator, all these types of positions that people need to do because people are still buying cars and driving cars and and they're still going to the I am picking up at the stadium like you said but there's no reason those jobs need to be paying 5:15 an hour. And in fact, especially since the employers are paying the temp agencies anywhere from between ten and fifteen dollars an hour for those same workers. So we're just basically asking is there an employer out there? Who's willing to hire Linda on and still? Looks like Chris wants to get back on. Okay, here we go. Keep want to talk over here. I guess there's some offices downtown but they'll do some training for computers and they'll guess they'll all pay you a dollar an hour while you being trained or something. I think because the employers, I think what you're saying is that there needs to be some sort of, I mean, you can have a part-time employment, but have it be regular. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, like, which could be built around people's schedules, especially women with children, or men with children for that matter. But I think it's going to get worse as it gets better. Yeah, we have this new Republican and things are, you know, they downsizing? Oh, yeah, downsizing. So it's really going to get worse before it gets

There are putting all the risks on the worker. Like you said, they don't care if you have a kid or not. They just care about production. Unfortunately, you know, it sounds like we've been doing this for a half hour and we've yet to get one single call. So we're kind of testing the employers out there in the city of Cleveland. I really, I really hope I'm wrong. I really hope that there are some employers who are actually out there willing to hire permanently, but it really it was good. At this place and I'll never forget, I can't think of the name of the company, but they had laid people off. Hmm. And it was this whole section that was close. And I'm like, I'm a scab. I mean, because this was a union job and I'm gonna, I'm a scab goes, will you me? I say while I'm here and meet other 20, people are here, we're scabs. That's the same 20 people that this here working. His tip, could be the same 20 people that they might have laid off. So you're saying they laid off unionized workers, and They laid off some union workers, kept union workers on but I said, yeah and put us in there.

They really the ones you really see like the one the lady with all the bags and all the colors. She really have mental health issues. She's not so much homeless. She

There are significant issues as far as why is it that we as a society have let some of our most vulnerable be on the streets when they don't need to be on the streets people with a mental illnesses or drug addictions or alcohol addictions one. Well, they're all drug-addicted. They're all mentally ill and crazy like that some sort of excuse for for saying that people should be homeless that that to me is a serious problem and I think so. There's two issues. One is it's not real representative of what's going on because you know, anyone wants to go on. HUD website. You can look at some serious programs that have gone out and done. Actually data collection to find out, who are the homeless, you know, statistically not to say that's really going to become a a liberal or something. I think everybody deserves a home. I don't care if they're crazy or whatever, even if they had to have somebody monitor. Sure. They meet everybody needs a home. Sure. Yeah, you know, it's really it's kind of scary actually because actually I just found out yesterday that Um, guys trying to buy my house out. He's trying to pay eighty thousand dollars, for some home and then he wants to gut it out and Rehab it. And it's got we've got two Flats in there and we're paying affordable and come rent. As far as as far as that goes. They want to kick us out and convert it into some Yuppie house on in the near west side. And it's just and part of the reason, the scary thing is this The reason why he liked the house is because my downstairs neighbor put a nice little Garden in front of our house. And so it's like if you make your house, look, nice and try and pick it up, then all these rich people want it, they want to buy it up and kick you out. And, you know, so it's like, I, I myself can understand as a student. I'm a graduate student and I basically am living below, poverty myself, and I can totally understand how easy it is. It is for people who are falling out and becoming homeless, you know, with these things happening all across the east side and the near West Side as far as real estate development goes. And as far as the fact that employers still, we still have not gotten a single employer calling for a job. We're halfway through the show and I still, I really am trying to hold out some hope that there's a good employer out there. Someone who really needs a solid worker in Linda. And can pay Seven dollars or more an hour. We're trying to see if this economy Works. We're trying to see if we're going to be stuck in a permanent temporary position where people are workers, are going to have to live in basically, homeless shelters and work in Sweatshop type conditions, without getting paid decently and a Linda's. Even said she'll work in those same jobs as if she's getting paid a decent wage and we're even not even Pointing it at a living wage. We started at 7:00 and most people say a living wage is around 10. So we're saying we're still going low here, $7 not here, but there's so far out and when you don't have a car you are thrille. Yeah, I mean like you, you know, you could be riding and you'll see a McDonald's in, they'll be paying seven dollars an hour. Hmm, but you have to be in a car, you can see, there's no way you can go out to these places right on the bus,

She's asking for a job, but the reality is we haven't got a single person who has a job out there to call. So it's all right. You still, we're going to still be plugging away. It'll be strong. Really, you know, Linda is one of the strong voices out there and I think one of the things that Linda was trying to say when I met her and this is, you know, just met this part, may be difficult for some of you all to hear. But the reality is as far as the homeless shelters, go once once you're in the homeless shelter, Why don't we just break it down, is too far. How far, you know, how hard is it to get out of that shelter? Well, first of all, what is it like in that shelter? I mean, because you obviously don't like living there, dude. I mean, maybe that's a way of it. What's the limit of bunch of women? Like, how many women 40 or more? Would you like to live with a bunch of women? I was like, I'm in jail, but at the same time, we can be real supportive of each other when somebody gets a job, and it looks like, I could go to be able to have those paychecks to stack, and barely get a home of your own, you get proud. You mean, sometimes it's hell and at the same time you don't feel so bad because you're not alone. You're not the person standing on a street corner. You can't say, God. I'm really depressed today. I didn't get to go out. I don't have to worry about a meal. They will feed me. I can wash my tail feather. I can do those things. But at the same time, it's so many things, the lady. Who called to chew me up and spit me out? Um, you're taking for granted if God was to take away your income and take a while to things and you would have to stand up to pee and do these things you take for granted so many things that taking a bath, you take for granted cooking your own dinner you or your washing, your dishes. Things, you take for granted. They once it's taken away. You please so much you can wash dishes. Hmm. And I think nothing of it right now. One at one time. I would complain, you know, watched know, and now, I know I look forward to it. Mmm sitting back even like you were saying, watching the PBS channel. Yeah, I think those are all like little things that I can appreciate what you're saying in part of the part of the reason is is because many people out there, listening, probably don't realize it, maybe you don't yourself, but I was homeless for two years myself and I would say one thing is, just being able to turn on the hot water. Yo, guy you have to walk a mile in somebody else's shoes to find out. I mean everybody's different. I've got to meet this older lady and she was in her 70s. And she was a retired nurse. And she didn't want to stay in a nursing home, and she was just there and she had a stroke, and now, they're sticking her in a nursing home. So, I don't. I've never met so many different backgrounds and different people. You never, you never would think this intelligent woman here, with this college. Degree is down here. Yeah. Yeah. No, I do this woman whose when I'm sick and tell her there's something wrong with me. Who old take this remedy and you'll be fine or or to sit there and take my temperature and my pulse to make sure I'm okay never believed that these intelligent women are homeless.

Hmm. Wow, and so as far as, as far as the programs that are out there, have they have they been helpful to you. I haven't really tried none of the programs because I really don't want to be in a setting of a lot more bunches. Women sure already surrounded by women already. I think when we were talking before about how the large majority of the program's assume that you have a drug addiction or assume that you're mentally ill and if you're just some Average, Joe who's trying to struggle to put things together and you want, Get a job transitional housing. There's no help out there for you is there? No not really. You have to to have some is pitiful to say I'm a I'm a crackhead so I can get help. I shouldn't have to lie about to get help. You should be able to get it. Yeah, I mean, right, you should be out there and it's something that you can be understand. That that's a disease that you can't control. I understand it, but it does. Same time. They don't need another program for just somebody who's down right now. No, just mmm-hmm. They're not out there. It's like you. Well, we didn't put you in this situation. Get yourself out, but it's a hard struggle, isn't easy. Yeah, it's people like to think it is.

I Now, if I didn't want to go into his I actually I was homeless when I was in New York City and we ended up actually. I got involved with some people who started taking over abandoned buildings and fixing them up and moving in. And so originally, that's what I did. When I was in New York. Technically, you're still homeless. If you're a squad or right? People used to call me a crackhead and all this and that even though I wasn't being a whole, you know, I wasn't doing drugs. But we fixed, you know, we'd fix up the buildings. Make them look real nice. And I actually got put together some money partly because I was living in this situation where I didn't have to pay bills. I got enough money to put together and then I moved to Cleveland, and I got this affordable housing that I have now on the near west side. And I think, It helps. I think it's a little bit easier. I have a car. I had a college degree at the time. Let's see. Their goals is because you had just because you're homeless doesn't necessarily mean mmm. You don't have an education. That's, you know,

sure. Yeah. No, I think that's, that's true. And there's how many people out there. I mean, I'd have to say this one thing that I found talking to people who are homeless in the city of Cleveland, is how Educated people are how well read they are. I mean, how many people here? Can talk about downsizing as a phenomenon that got under one of the caller's nerves, but the reality is, it's true. It's if you look at what's happening to the economy as a whole, if anybody studies economy economics, they know that's true. And I can understand somebody who's working, two jobs, may not have the time to do that reading, but it's That is what's happening. And there's a lot of homeless who spend their weekends in the library reading and studying and writing, and there are plenty of homeless who do know how to use a computer. So, I, I do think that it really is when you look at it has to do with issues of employers, whether they're willing to take the risks and actually hire permanent employees. And if they're not going to take those risks, then I think it is. Permit temps, then we're going to subsidize an employment agency. That's going to get you the full amount that's being paid and get people health care benefits, you know, because they're subsidizing, big corporations and real estate development left and right. When is it that they're going to start recognizing the play of the working class? I don't know. Be glad when that day comes, but I doubt it. It's just money. Yeah, and the way I think is it's going to be when we Start organizing, you know, start coming together and people can start recognizing that they're up against the same thing whether the homeless are not color.
