This collection includes two letters written by Boyd Myers (1833-1913) to his sister, Mrs. Ruth Seager in April 1865 while he was stationed in Washington, D.C.
Myers was in the 154th New York Volunteer Infantry (Hardtack Regiment). He enlisted on July 29, 1862 in Napoli, NY and mustered out on June 27, 1865 in Washington, D.C. During his service, Myers mustered in as a corporal in Company A on September 24, 1862; he was captured in action on May 2, 1863, at Chancellorsville, VA; was paroled on May 16, 1863, at City Point, VA; transferred to the Fourteenth Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, on September 16, 1864; and assigned to Company G on March 1, 1865.
The two letters document two historic events in April 1865: General Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
